UK grants CO2 appraisal license to Eni

Eni announced Thursday it was granted a CO2 appraisal and storage license by the UK’s Oil and Gas Authority (OGA).

The license is a first step for Eni UK to permanently store CO2 captured in northwest England and north Wales, in depleted reservoirs in the East Irish Sea. The area covers the Hamilton, Hamilton North and Lennox fields.

The company will need to apply for a storage permit and associated approvals prior to any CO2 storage operations commencing. The appraisal license has a six-year term.

Eni, alongside other industrial players, are developing the so-called HyNet carbon capture and hydrogen generation project. It aims to address decarbonization needs from existing industries for fuel switching, heating, power and transportation.

“This is a vitally important project for Eni and represents a milestone for the 2050 net zero ambitions of the UK and a fundamental pillar for the strategy of energy transition and decarbonization that Eni is strongly committed to,” said Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi.
