Tributes paid to dad who died while working on Scots oil platform as cops launch probe

Police are probing the sudden death of Steven Wright, 45, who died on the Scott rig, around 115 miles north-east of Aberdeen.

Tributes have been paid to a dad who collapsed and died while working on a Scottish oil platform. Steven Wright, known as Steve, is believed to have fallen unwell while working on board the CNOOC-operated Scott platform on Friday, August 4.

Emergency services attended the rig, around 115 miles north-east of Aberdeen, but Steve was pronounced dead at the scene. Police investigations are currently ongoing to establish the circumstances around the 45-year-old's death.

Colleagues at the Scott platform said Steve, from Newcastle, will be "greatly missed by all who knew him".

Posting on a fundraiser set-up to support his family, organiser Thomas Grundy added: "Steve was highly thought of and liked by all who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him in his years of working both on and offshore."

Rope access worker Steve sadly leaves behind his partner Rachel and son Dylan.

In a statement shared with Energy Voice, CNOOC said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of an employee working offshore on Friday, August 4, 2023.

"The individual’s family have been informed and we are supporting them through this difficult time. The news has understandably left co-workers shocked and saddened, and we are working to provide them with the support they need."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 12.35pm on Friday, August 4, police were advised a man had fallen ill on a North Sea oil platform.

"Emergency services attended, however, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been informed. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the death."
