REACTION: Committee on Climate Change Progress Report

The Committee on Climate Change has today (June 25) published its annual progress report to Parliament, providing new advice to the UK Government on securing a green and resilient recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Responding, Morag Watson, Director of Policy at Scottish Renewables, said:

“We welcome the Committee’s recognition that extensive electrification of transport and heating, supported by a major expansion of renewable power generation, is required to meet our climate targets, and that investments in low-carbon infrastructure must be at the heart of measures to restore economic growth.

"Investing in the expansion of renewable energy generation can provide the stimulus needed for a sustainable economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, creating high-quality green jobs of the future and delivering environmental benefits across the UK.

“The Committee reiterates that mature renewable technologies like wind and solar power are as cheap as, or cheaper than, new fossil-fuel alternatives. Accelerating the transition to a low-carbon energy system powered by renewable energy is essential if we are to emerge from this crisis with a stable, resilient economy which supports net zero.”
