OGV Energy notes a rise in the volume of job vacancies for the Energy sector

As May 2019 draws to a close, Energy sector recruitment platform “OGV Jobs” has seen a 24% rise in the number of vacancies posted on their website and in their monthly recruitment publication “OGV Jobs Newspaper”, over the last month.

The Jobs board and the newspaper have only been up and running in their new format since the beginning of 2019 and already there are just under 200 jobs currently posted on the job board and close to 150 in the paper and this is growing every week.

A stable Oil price, coupled with far lower lifting costs for the Operators and returning investment through private equity to the sector, has helped renew confidence and this is now turning into increased hiring by the supply chain.

“OGV Jobs board” and “OGV Jobs Newspaper” feature job opportunities across a range of disciplines for the Oil and Gas and Renewable markets, including Drilling, Engineering & Design, Subsea, Production & Operations, Maintenance, Integrity and Inspection, HSEQ, Business Support Services, Professional Trades and Cyber Security.

In line with some of the observations made in the recent “UKCS Workforce Dynamics: The Skills Landscape 2019 – 2025” report launched on the 2nd of May by OPITO, there is evidence that we are starting to see a rise in opportunities in Production and Operations once again as well as Maintenance and Asset Integrity roles, as companies look to optimise the life of their infrastructure.

James Bream - General Manager of Katoni Engineering, a company focused on delivering brownfield modification solutions, backed this up:

“Statistics on job advertising is a useful metric of market activity. We are aware that the labour market is tight and competition in the supply chain sector remains significant so having exceptional people is vital. The best people are in high demand and as a result we’ll continue to offer personalised packages to attract industry leading talent. We’ve more than doubled our headcount in the last year but cannot be complacent if the OGV outlook is right as we’ll be recruiting further through 2019.”

OGV Jobs are also seeing increased activity in the Subsea sector, in areas such as Project Engineering and ROV disciplines, as companies start to engage with new EPC projects and explore opportunities in automated underwater vehicles.

In parallel with this, OGV Jobs are also seeing an upsurge in hires in the decommissioning sector as well, as some operators look to bring in Consultants to help them plan for the end of their asset life.

The Renewables sector also increases at pace as Peter Tipler, Renewables Director at Xodus Group comments:

“The capabilities and skillsets developed in oil and gas over several decades are increasingly playing an important role in the development and construction of offshore wind. Xodus is recruiting across the globe at present to meet demand across its Renewables Services divisions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.  For over 15 years we have been adept at attracting and retaining consultants with a keen interest across the offshore energy sector as a whole and I only see our Renewables business continuing to grow as the Energy transition continues.”

With the predicted shortage of talent for the Energy industry now beginning to become evident as many of the skilled professionals who left the industry not interested in coming back, the Energy sector is having to come to terms with the fact that the war on talent is beginning to start over again.

OGV Jobs have seen many of its clients acknowledging this fact with some of them already looking at new ways to promote their brand to prospective candidates.

Dan Hyland, Operation Director at OGV Energy commented: “We are delighted to say that many of our clients are now embracing the power of digital media as a way to promote their brand to the future talent of the energy sector. Organisations are creating corporate videos and video vacancies to showcase their value proposition and it is delivering results.

The videos allow organisations to show candidates what their future place of work could look like, who the hiring manager is and who will be in their team, as well as articulating the culture and values of the company and discussing current projects. This is a step change from the two-dimensional job descriptions, which in many cases are just not fit for purpose, so I’m sure it will mean a far higher calibre of candidate for clients as they will genuinely understand the opportunity when they apply.”

“OGV Jobs” is part of “OGV Energy’s” wider digital engagement platform which is focused on News, Events and Recruitment Solutions for the energy industry.
