North Sea Assets to Run 34 Years Longer than Presumed

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) revealed Thursday that it has granted Equinor consent to use the facilities on the Tordis and Vigdis fields until December 31, 2036, and December 31, 2040, respectively.

Consents were due to expire at Tordis in December 2019 and at Vigdis in March 2024. The facilities are now scheduled to operate for a total of 34 years longer than originally presumed.

“Utilization of the facilities on Tordis and Vigdis beyond the original lifetime will contribute to increase value creation on the Norwegian shelf, and that’s good resource management,” Arvid Osthus, the NPD’s Northern North Sea assistant director of development and operations, said in an organization statement.

Equinor is the operator of the fields, both of which are located in production license 089 in the Tampen area in the northern part of the North Sea.

Tordis is developed with a central subsea manifold tied to the Gullfaks C facility. Seven separate satellite wells and two subsea templates are connected to the manifold. Vigdis is developed with seven subsea templates and two satellite wells which are tied to the Snorre A facility.

Tordis has produced since 1994 and Vigdis since 1997. Current licensees on both fields are Equinor, Petoro, ExxonMobil, Idemitsu Petroleum and DEA Norge.

Earlier this year, the NPD gave the go ahead for Equinor to use the C platform on the Gullfaks field in the North Sea until June 30, 2036. Gullfaks C was installed in May 1989 and started producing in January 1990. The design lifetime was 30 years.
