Legasea: Transforming the industry’s attitude to waste Management

Recently formed Legasea is challenging the status quo when it comes to waste management in the energy industry. They provide an alternative route for recovered subsea production systems and were launched with the intention of 'changing the energy industry for the better!'

When operators decommission subsea production systems, or deem them no longer suitable, the typical practice would be to dispose through recycling, eliminating the opportunity to re-use. Legasea can offer an alternative route for this equipment, removing any concerns regarding liability and duty of care.  Adapting this way of working is crucial at a time when factors such as industry efficiencies and regulations are driving the industry to change. Legasea have been responsive towards this issue, launching a full-service solution for the energy sector, using their technical expertise through their obsolescence management service, they can recover, refurbish and re-certify equipment ready for reuse.  The company is a one-stop shop for subsea production systems, providing cleaning services, refurbishment, re-certification, test and assembly, hydraulic and electrical subsea production testing, manufacturing and re-manufacturing. All delivered efficiently and cost-effectively.

As the fields in the UKCS are maturing, demand for replacement critical components such as electrical connectors and hydraulic couplings, is exceeding supply.  Many of these components are becoming harder to source, have long lead times or are obsolete, causing disruption to production, which is costing the industry. These same components continue to be treated as disposable commodities, devalued to metal scrap.

When visiting their impressive facility in Echt, it’s clear to see that their recycle and re-use ethos runs throughout the entire business. On entering reception, there are upscaled seats created from wooden barrels and a collection of handcrafted furniture in their boardroom, made from recycled wood.

The size of their new facility allows Legasea to take on large scale projects and offer a complete storage service and handling package for clients.

The team of experts have combined experience in subsea and manufacturing, which makes them the ideal choice to implement a new waste management strategy for their clients. In following the waste management hierarchical pyramid, offering prevention through early identification pre-decommissioning and re-use through remanufacturing, Legasea can help tailor a company’s existing process for the future of obsolescence management.

Operations Director, Ray Milne said, “We are at a very exciting phase, following our start-up, we have been overwhelmed by the positive response from the industry. There is a real appetite, amongst the operators and service companies, to be more environmentally conscious whilst; at the same time; saving costs incurred in production and decommissioning.”
