Global growth prompts graduate recruitment at Salus Technical

Since launching its software solution for streamlining risk assessment last year, process safety firm Salus Technical has broadened its customer base across a range of major hazard industries around the globe, and now counts users of its cloud-based software across 6 different time zones, including South America and New Zealand.

The firm’s consultancy services are also sought-after, with contracts signed to support operators and service companies with process safety training and operations across the UK.

To meet this demand Salus Technical have appointed Chemical Engineering graduate, Umar Abdurrehman, to the position of graduate process safety engineer. Umar will be immersed in all areas of the business, including engineering, software development, sales and marketing. He will support the team on live consultancy jobs, and preparing proposals for potential work, as well as providing ongoing assistance to Bowtie Master customers, and helping to develop online tutorials.

Salus Technical secured funding from Opportunity North East’s (ONE) Graduates into Business programme. As well as contributing to Umar’s recruitment and employment costs, the programme also supports his development and training with funding from the North East Economic Recovery and Skills Fund. He is part of a cohort of more than 30 graduates supported by the programme, who will receive ongoing coaching and development support from ONE.

After graduating from the University of Strathclyde with a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering with Distinction, Umar continued to work with the Engineering faculty to continue his Masters project, and created a simulation software intended to support students. He also went on to create video tutorials to help students understand the software and course contents, using advanced video editing software, and competed a 6-week process engineering placement in Crewe.

Glasgow-born Umar commented: “The amazing thing at Salus Technical is there are endless learning opportunities due to the scale and variety of ongoing consultancy and software projects such as Bowtie Master and another product launching soon. I also feel extremely grateful to be working closely with two experienced engineers, from whom I can learn so much. Even in the short time I have spent with David and Andrea, I have gained vast insights, and I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by specialists within the field. Being placed front and centre in a company as a graduate is unheard-of, and I can’t wait to play my role in supporting Salus Technical’s continuing growth.”

After launching Salus Technical, David Jamieson developed the cloud-based software, Bowtie Master, with the intention of helping organisations to understand and manage the risks of major accident hazards, thereby reducing their incidence. In addition to Bowtie Master, Salus currently have a second product in development which is set to launch early this year. Assisting with Human Factors Engineering, allowing users to better understand how human error can contribute to major accidents, it will also be applicable to multiple industries around the globe.
