Worley champions STEM at its Parents’ & Children’s Evening

On Monday, Worley turned the tables on parents by holding a Parents’ & Children’s Evening at its Annan House office, as part of its wider programme of employee events during Learning Week. Worley employees were invited to bring their children or young relatives into the office to learn more about what their parents do at work.

Shaun Poll, VP of Operations UK said, “As a father of two, I know how enlightening it can be to get that insight into the day-to-day life of your child through a school parent’s evening. We thought that flipping this concept around to give the kids the same opportunity to visit and learn more about the day-to-day lives of their parents, and the industry they are so dedicated to, would be a great way to engage this group of young people.

“We’re fresh off the back of a major merger that has doubled the number of talented people in our business and extends the breadth and depth of services we provide. So, there’s a lot for us to be excited about right now. However, we always have one eye firmly fixed on the future of our business and our industry, and on finding different ways to engage the next generation of talent. This event was a great example of that in action and hopefully we left the children feeling excited about the prospect of one day following in their parent’s footsteps.”

During Worley’s Parents’ & Children’s Evening, children had the opportunity to get hands-on with several different STEM-related activity stations. This included exploring a real-life offshore facility using virtual reality, trying on and learning about the importance of PPE, testing their construction skills at the Lego station, creating working electrical circuits, and taking part in a poster competition to showcase the new Worley brand.

For older children, who are at the stage of choosing subjects at school, Worley’s Learning & Development team and graduates were also on hand to give career advice and talk about career opportunities and skills needs in the energy industry.

Marti Scott, Senior Material Controller at Worley, took his two daughters into work and is keen for the business to hold more events like this in future, “One of my daughters was still talking about the experience this morning. Although she’s previously spoken about becoming a lawyer, she left thinking more about a career in engineering and is even talking about tailoring her subject choices towards electrical engineering!”
