UK based service firm drills ahead with US expansion

An Aberdeen headquartered drilling equipment inspection and maintenance firm has expanded its Houston division investing in larger premises and appointing two new US technical directors to manage its international operations.

RigQuip, which opened an office in Houston last year, has now moved into a 15,000sq ft service facility, including office, workshop and yard space to support its growing client base.

Highlighting its commitment in the region, RigQuip has also further enhanced its senior management team with the addition of two Houston-based industry experts.

With a combined 50 years of drilling equipment maintenance experience, Chuck Tuley joins as operations director, with Joe Klimple as manufacturing and service director.

Launched in 2006, the privately owned business, which specialises in drilling equipment, engineering, service and parts, has a global presence with operations in the UK, UAE, Singapore, USA and Mexico.

Mr Tuley brings 20 years of expertise following a career managing international maintenance projects for drilling contractors, with a focus on special periodic surveys, rig reactivations and condition-based maintenance.  He also has detailed equipment knowledge and experience, having started his career at a major equipment manufacturer.

With 30 years in the industry, Mr Klimple is a well-known figure. His experience includes delivery of major new build rig projects internationally and management of OEM equipment manufacturing plants and service facilities. He is a technical authority on drilling equipment manufacturing and service.

RigQuip managing director, Matt Fraser, said: “As we continue to scale our business internationally, establishment of enhanced US facilities and appointment of a new team of directors to run our global operations are key components of our strategy.  Many of our major clients are headquartered in Houston and the talent base here also remains very strong. With Chuck and Joe at the helm of our senior management team, the business will continue its success in the US and overseas.”

Mr Tuley said: “I am excited about my new adventure with RigQuip as Operations Director globally. I have had the pleasure, over the last 25 years, to work in both the equipment service side and drilling contractor side of the business, across multiple regions. Understanding both sides has provided a lot of insight that I plan to share with others.

The drilling market is very dynamic, and I am optimistic that it will stabilize further, this time with further lean, cost conscious strategies. These are where I believe RigQuip can support on a global scale, helping drilling contractors maintain the highest standards of safety and quality. RigQuip is investing internationally in top talent to ensure we continue to meet and exceed our customer’s expectations. I look forward to the future and the partnerships that will be created along the way.”

Mr Klimple added: “In my 30 plus years in this industry I have seen my share of turbulent market conditions. The hard work, knowledge, and experience of the team here at RigQuip has meant it is one of the few companies in our industry to prosper and grow, even during the challenges of the pandemic. We are the world’s most experienced independent drilling equipment service organisation and the future of our industry lies with companies like us, where the main manufacturers no longer provide the level of support required. On site and in our workshops, our high quality and competitively priced approach delivers what our customers are looking for.”

Headquartered in Aberdeen’s Union Plaza, with service facilities in Dyce, RigQuip has a team of 60 across its six worldwide locations.  RigQuip will operate as RigQuip Inc. in the United States.
