The shifting sands of recruitment

Leading oil & gas recruitment specialist firm Prodrill has experienced a significant shift in demand for personnel as the employment landscape changes. Over the last 12 months, permanent staff roles have increased by 85% across its eight key divisions in the upstream environment. With a delay in decision making due to Brexit and uncertainty around forthcoming changes in legislation, this has certainly made an impact on client recruitment processes. With improved confidence in the oil and gas sector and projects now being sanctioned, companies are able to move forward and recruit talented individuals whether this be permanent, temporary or contract opportunities.

Recently published by KMPG & REC (Recruitment & Employment Confederation) UK report on jobs – in December 2019, data from UK recruiters signalled the first rise in permanent staff appointments for a year, with a further increase being recorded in January 2020. Although the rate of growth was modest, it marked the first upturn in permanent staff appointments for one year. However, in January 2020, temporary billings fell for the first time since April 2013, with several recruiters blaming this on upcoming changes to off-payroll working (IR35 reform).

Drew Alexander, client relationship director of Prodrill, says all businesses have had to diversify at some point, whether it’s due to economic, political or operational demands and Prodrill, a leading name in technical oil and gas recruitment  has adapted to changing recruitment landscapes that the oil and gas industry has faced over the years. This recent national report affirms what is happening across the UK’s oil and gas industry with similar trends and patterns emerging from local and national employers that we support.

“We have experienced a substantial increase in interim temporary workers (PAYE) and permanent roles, which represents the change in recruitment patterns from our clients over the past 12 months compared to the same period the previous year. We are seeing new temporary worker assignments now being issued for a longer period of time, some up to 24 months as opposed to previously shorter work scopes ranging from 6-12 months. This will give the temporary labour market some stability and offer workers longer term security of work projects.

“Prodrill, has always been recognised as a recruitment partner of choice, leading the way within the contractor market. Over the past several years, we have expanded our service offering to clients by supporting their future talent acquisition plans across permanent engineering and executive level positions; our staffing division, Prodrill Permanent People, is one of the fastest growing areas of the business. Knowing our market and identifying highly skilled individuals has always been our strength, we continue to deliver the best personnel solutions to meet the demands of clients’ technical requirements and cultural values.

“The imminent changes in legislation is unsettling for companies and contractors alike. Once all end user clients consider their corporate strategy, risk assessments and resource requirements, we should begin to see a level playing field and the options for workers both permanent and interim will become clearer. Strategy dependent, this may give a competitive edge for some companies subject to the terms offered to individuals, one thing is clear the industry shall always have a requirement for a flexible workforce due to the cyclic and project driven nature of the oil and gas industry.”
