Siemens Gamesa secures wind turbine supply order in Philippines

The Capa wind farm will be equipped with 14 turbines and is expected to come online by the first quarter of 2024.

Germany-based energy company Siemens Gamesa has secured a turbine contract in the Philippines from renewable developer ACEN following the country’s first round of renewable energy auctions.

Under the contract, Siemens Gamesa will provide 14 of its SG 5.0-145 turbines for the 70MW Capa wind farm.

The wind farm is being developed in Caparispisan, Ilocos Norte, and is expected to come online by the first quarter of 2024.

In addition, Siemens Gamesa has agreed to provide operation and maintenance services for the project for a period of five years.

Siemens Gamesa South-East Asia Sales head Mart Huismans said: “It is encouraging to see an increased political commitment in the Philippines to boost wind power to enhance energy security and protect the environment.

“We’re pleased to strengthen the partnership with ACEN to develop more wind power in the Philippines, which accounts for just 1% of electricity production, while the target is to achieve 9% by 2030 and 13% by 2035.

“Together with our partners, we will help to unlock the full potential of wind.”

The Philippines held its first round of auctions in June, in which bids were placed for nearly 2GW of renewable capacity across various projects.

The auctions also aimed to attract more investment in renewable energy at competitive prices.

The Philippines has set a target of at least 35% of renewable power by 2030 and 50% by 2040 to achieve energy security and sustainable development.

Earlier this month, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy was awarded a contract for the Ishikari offshore wind power project in Japan.

The company will supply 14 of its SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines, each with 8MW of capacity and a 167m rotor, for the 112MW wind project.

The Ishikari project is located nearly 5km from the shore of Ishikari Bay in Hokkaido, Japan.
