Petrofac wins engineering deal for Aussie green hydrogen project

Infinite Blue Energy Pty Ltd has picked energy services provider Petrofac Ltd for the engineering design of its AUD-346-million (USD 248m/EUR 211.5m) commercial-scale green hydrogen project in Western Australia.

The green hydrogen developer said on Monday it has struck a deal with Petrofac to progress the Arrowsmith project through front-end engineering design (FEED) before a final investment decision is taken in the first quarter of 2021.

Planned for a site in Dongara, about 320 km (198.8 miles) north of Perth, the Arrowsmith facility will have the capacity to produce 25 tonnes of green hydrogen a day, relying on a hydrolysis process powered by solar panels and wind turbines. It is set to create Australia's first commercial-scale green hydrogen complex, offering the possibility to be expanded to a “global-scale plant” that could potentially export liquid hydrogen to the Asia Pacific.

First hydrogen production from the site is targeted by late 2022. As previously announced, the developer has agreed to source electricity from wind farms owned by Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems (CPH:VWS).

According to Infinite Blue Energy, the project can be replicated in other areas throughout regional Australia. In August, it secured AUD 22 million in state funding for the scheme.
