Pentland Firth tidal power boss takes up new post as energy group chief executive

One of the Highlands' key companies, Global Energy Group (GEG) has appointed Tim Cornelius as its new group chief executive.

Mr Cornelius will report directly to GEG chairman Roy MacGregor and will be responsible for group financial performance, group strategy and transition management from a hydrocarbon to a low-carbon business focus.

His new role was announced shortly after Mr Cornelius stepped down as chief executive of Simec Atlantis Energy, where he led Europe's largest tidal power project, the 398MW MeyGen tidal stream turbine in the Pentland Firth.

Mr Cornelius was appointed a non-executive director of GEG earlier this month, but has been involved with GEG Port of Nigg Energy Park for several years as a customer, but also as a public supporter of its ambitions to become the UK’s leading renewables hub.

Originally from Australia, his extensive energy sector experience began as a commercial diver and ROV pilot in the oil and gas sector before moving into the renewable field at the start of the millennium.

Mr Cornelius was recently recognised with a life-time achievement award by Scottish Renewables for outstanding contribution to the growth of the Scottish renewable energy sector over the past decade.

He has worked with the Scottish, Westminster and European governments at senior level and has deep sector knowledge in offshore renewables, oil andgas, waste-to-energy, hydropower and the emerging hydrogen sector, and has developed a reputation for successfully raising funding for and delivering on renewable energy projects in the UK and abroad.

Mr Cornelius commented: “It is a privilege to be afforded the opportunity to join GEG at such an exciting time in the company’s evolution and growth trajectory. Their reputation for the delivery of high-quality services across the full spectrum of energy sectors, coupled with the strategic location of their assets makes this one of the most exciting roles in the UK energy sector. The Chairman has set a high bar with respect to measuring success going forward and he has built a company that values safety, quality and reputation above all other metrics.

"I look forward to working with the team at GG to build a UK energy services powerhouse that will be at the forefront of the green recovery, as governments target a green and resilient future."

Global Energy Group chairman Roy MacGregor added: “I am delighted to formally welcome Tim on board as CEO. He has a long working history with the group as both customer and advisor. I am confident that with Tim’s skills and experience within the industry together with his established relationships with our existing leadership team, that he will lead the Group through this next phase of the energy transition with a clear strategy and focus, utilising our long history in all energy markets, cementing the Group's place within the clean energy industry for years to come.”

Mr Cornelius, will also maintain his links with Simec Atlantis Energy, where he was chief executive for 15 years, as a senior advisor to the group, where he will continue to support the board and company on a range of matters.
