Ground-breaking North Sea Energy deal the focus of Offshore Energy UK’s 2022 conference

Linda Z Cook, CEO of Harbour Energy and Dr Andy Samuel CEO of the North Sea Transition Authority are two of the leading figures confirmed to deliver keynote speeches on the North Sea Transition Deal at the 2022 annual conference hosted by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK).

This year’s event on Tuesday May 24 marks the first annual conference to be hosted by Offshore Energies UK since it evolved into the leading trade body for organisations with an interest in offshore oil, gas, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and wind.

Taking place at Aberdeen’s P&J Live venue, the conference theme is ‘The North Sea Transition Deal: delivering cleaner energy securely’. Marking its first anniversary in March, the deal agreed with the government in 2021 to set the course for helping deliver net zero emissions by 2050, shows how oil and gas producing countries can move fairly towards a lower carbon future in a way that supports the economy, jobs, and energy communities across the UK.

The programme for the event supported by principal sponsor Worley – a multi-sector engineering company, features sessions on the North Sea Transition Deal’s five themes which comprise Carbon Capture and Storage, Hydrogen, Energy Supply Decarbonisation, Supply Chain Transformation and People and Skills along with the challenges and opportunities they present for the offshore energy sector. With geopolitical and economic unpredictability dominating the news, OEUK’s chief executive, Deirdre Michie OBE is chairing a panel session focused on ensuring security of energy supply.

Daniel McAteer, Vice President of Energy at Worley said:

“We’re delighted to be the main sponsor of this event and look forward to participating in discussions about how we can collectively move towards a lower carbon future. Delivering more sustainable energy is Worley’s key focus and we value the relationship we have with OEUK, which continuously works with its members to help deliver cleaner energy to meet the UK’s net-zero ambitions.”

Dr Andy Samuel CEO of the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) said:

“The North Sea Transition Deal is a great plan on paper, but we can’t let it gather dust. We must turn ideas into action and see real delivery on carbon storage, platform electrification, and hydrogen, while still pushing ahead with ensuring the UK’s energy security. The offshore energy industry is strong on innovation and this year is critical. I look forward to sharing the NSTA’s perspective and hearing industry’s progress at this timely OEUK conference.”

Linda Z Cook, CEO of Harbour Energy, said:

“Given the challenges introduced by a global pandemic, the war in Ukraine and implications for Russian exports, and an uneven journey towards a lower carbon economy, there’s perhaps never been a more important time to discuss energy and energy security.   I look forward to sharing perspectives from an oil and gas producer and engaging in dialogue around how the energy industry can continue to work with other stakeholders to further the aims of the North Sea Transition Deal.”

OEUK chief executive Deirdre Michie said:

“Our conference is the ideal arena for offshore energy producers and our world-class supply chain to learn more about Deal and the role they play in delivering clean and secure energy to the UK. Over the past year, great progress has been achieved through our work with the UK government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and invest in innovative low -carbon technology to help us deliver the skills, innovation and infrastructure required to meet the UK’s carbon reduction targets by 2050.”
