Contract Wins Set Aberdeen Energy Training Firm On Growth Trajectory

Leading energy training consultancy Salos Sunesis has announced plans to double its size over the next two years as the global drilling rig markets heat up.

The Aberdeen-based firm combines technical training for complex wells in conjunction with advanced human factors, to support energy companies throughout the complete lifecycle of a drilling project. Since launching in 1996 it has successfully supported drilling teams around the world, most recently, from Gabon to Mexico, Malaysia to the North Sea, helping operators to build high-reliability cultures.

The company has secured contracts totalling more than £1.4 million in the last 12 months with Operators, Drilling Contractors and service companies and is now targeting further significant expansion across key regions such as Latin America and Asia.

Industry veteran Keith Coghill has joined the company as a Non-Executive Director to support the delivery of its growth ambitions. He brings more than 30 years of international experience in managing challenging and complex drilling projects, often in extreme conditions. He has held senior international leadership positions within a super major, smaller operators, and global engineering consultancies.

Grant Wallace, Managing Director of Salos Sunesis, said: “We’re facing a situation where there has been a notable uptick in drilling activity which is great news for the industry but after an extended period of minimal drilling projects, teams don’t have the right mix of technical capabilities and human performance competencies to deliver projects safely – particularly on complex well projects such as deep water, managed pressure drilling and high pressure high temperature (HPHT).

“Now, as the market really starts to pick up, we are seeing major opportunities, particularly in the Americas and Asia for our services. The appointment of Keith is a key milestone for us as we set our sights on a further period of significant growth – his insights and experience will be invaluable in helping our client’s and Salos Sunesis achieve our targets.

“We work in partnership with our clients to deliver training and coaching that is specific to their project – blending technical and human performance elements and utilising the latest simulator technology at the well site. It’s really rewarding to see the lightbulbs go on with the people we work with when they’re at the well site and the return on investment to our clients has been significant.”

Keith is a natural fit with Salos Sunesis’ growth ambitions having managed drilling projects around the world - from the remote desert, jungle and foothills land drilling to near arctic deepwater offshore operations, specialising in hazardous security environments. His work for a major NGO where he is a technical advisor for first wave emergency disaster response has also given him further insight into the criticality of human performance under extreme conditions. The training and coaching Salos Sunesis provides not only ensures people are safe at work but is also transforming overall project performance outcomes whilst accelerating personal and team competence.”

Keith added: “I am excited to be joining Salos as the company builds further upon its existing international operations having been highly impressed by their combination of both technical training and simulators to bring technical expertise combined with their onsite coaching to embed continuous improvement and lasting cultural change. Their Human Factors training and coaching is particularly relevant in the current climate and its use of the Aviation Industry best practices as applied to the oil industry makes this an area of extreme growth across industry sectors.
