BP America taps David Lawler as new chief

David C. Lawler is adding to his titles at BP America.

He is currently the CEO of BPX Energy and will become chairman and president of BP America on July 1, succeeding retiring Susan Dio.

He will remain as CEO of BPX Energy.

“Beyond a track record of delivering strong safety, environmental and commercial results, Dave brings an authentic and inspiring leadership style. His curiosity and willingness to do things differently will be essential as we reinvent BP and reimagine energy for people and our planet,” said BP CEO Bernard Looney in a statement.

He will also direct the company’s efforts to go net zero carbon by 2050 or sooner.

Lawler served as CEO of BPX Energy since 2014. He led the $10.5 billion acquisition and integration of BHP’s American shale assets in 2018.

His team also worked to develop oilfield infrastructure to lower operational emissions and eliminate routine gas flaring in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico.

He joined BP from SandRidge Energy where he had served as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

He is a native of Denver, Colorado, and graduated from the Colorado School of Mines. He earned his MBA from Tulane University.

His brother, Doug, is CEO of struggling Chesapeake Energy based on Oklahoma.

BP has 13,000 workers in the United States and it has invested $30 billion in the U.S. since 2016. The U.S. operations produced one third of the company’s global revenues in 2019.

Dio, a 36-year veteran of BP, had served as BP American chairman and president since 2018. She will retire later this year.

Looney called her “an extraordinary leader and mentor.”
