Alpha sets sights on Australia after successful first year

One year after entering the Australian wind energy market, Alpha Offshore Service has successfully completed its first 10 projects in the area.

The Denmark-based company, which was acquired by Sparrows Group in 2017, specialises in delivering integrated engineering, maintenance, repair and inspection services to onshore and offshore wind developments.

Alpha expanded into the Australian market in February last year to support new and existing clients with operations in West Australia, South Australia and New South Wales. These 10 key campaigns over the past 12 months have seen the company implementing wind turbine blade upgrades as well as carrying out main component exchanges for a development which required 26 gears to be upgraded.

The region has enjoyed steady uptake in renewable energy. Australia’s Clean Energy Council reported that 14.7 gigawatts worth of large-scale wind and solar projects were either under construction or had reached financial closure by the end of 2018. Last year also saw a record $20 billion of investment in big wind, solar and energy storage projects.

Mikkel Lund, chief executive officer at Alpha said: “We recognised the growing opportunity to deliver specialist inspection and maintenance services in Australia as its wind market continues to grow at pace. The Sparrows Group infrastructure in the region allowed us to move into the country quickly to begin delivering planned inspection and maintenance programmes which are vital to the ongoing productivity of wind turbines.

“Last year our business experienced an overall revenue increase of 46% up from 2017’s figures. Our move into Australia is part of our long-term growth strategy to expand our international presence. We look forward to investing further in the region and expect to see our success follow a similar growth trend for the foreseeable future.”

In 2018, Alpha successfully completed over 4,000 turbine blade inspections globally.
