AFBE-UK Scotland launches mentoring programme for next generation

AFBE-UK Scotland, an organisation that encourages greater diversity and inclusion in the energy and engineering sectors, is launching a mentoring programme.

The social enterprise’s latest project, due to be unveiled on Saturday, November 28 (2020) at 2pm, has been introduced to inspire the next generation of industry professionals and create leaders in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) sectors.

The programme is available to all members of AFBE-UK seeking to develop their careers. More than 40 students, graduates and professionals have signed up for the programme.

The Scotland-based mentoring team for this programme consists of Ibim Diri, an exploration geophysicist, Denis Pinto, managing director and owner of Caledonian Flow Systems and Chudi Okenwa, a production engineer. They were also involved in writing a new mentoring handbook alongside AFBE-UK’s London-based team.

Ibim Diri, mentoring programme co-ordinator at Aberdeen-based AFBE-UK Scotland, said: "We're very excited to launch AFBE-UK Scotland's first formal mentoring programme. As someone who has benefitted from mentorship, I understand the long-term impact of an initiative like this."

Dr Ollie Folayan, chair of AFBE-UK Scotland, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of the mentoring programme. This is an opportunity for valuable support and advice to be passed on to those looking to develop their careers in the engineering and technology sectors.”

The panellists at the launch event are:

  • Kola Akintayo  -  Human Resources & Talent Acquisition Leader, Oceaneering
  • Teresa Waddington  - Asset HSSE Manager at LNG Canada  (OGUK Mentor of the Year 2019)
  • Ronye Egborge - CEO Retech Energy Nigeria
  • Demi Ademuyewo, Project Manager, Siemens

Established in 2011, AFBE-UK Scotland has three other engagement programmes: its schools programme, NextGen, in which industry professionals give up their time to highlight engineering as a career choice to pupils; Real Projects, which invites business leaders to speak on their area of expertise and Transition, an event to prepare students and graduates for the world of work.

AFBE-UK Scotland promotes diversity and inclusion. It encourages all young people, particularly those of black and minority ethnic (BME) origin, to consider a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Events take place online, with face-to-face events previously held in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

To celebrate the achievements of BME industry professionals, the AFBE-UK Scotland Diversity and Inclusion Awards event is due to take place in Aberdeen in April (2021).
